The Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias headed an expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa in the hope of finding a trade route to India. Dias and his fleet eventually entered what he named Aguada de São Brás (Bay of Saint Blaise) – later renamed Mossel Bayafter the abundance of mussels in the bay – on 3 February 1488. His landing will again be celebrated this year with the 2015 Dias Festival from 29 January 2015 to 1 February 2015.
In the spirit of “Where Cultures Meet” there will be something for everybody to enjoy at the 2015 Dias Festival – 527 years down the road of the landing of Dias’s fleet at Mossel Bay on 3 February 1488. And the best of all – entry will be FREE, including to stage performances by some of South Africa’s top artists!
