The Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias headed an expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa in the hope of finding a trade route to India. Dias and his fleet eventually entered what he named Aguada de São Brás (Bay of Saint Blaise) – later renamed Mossel Bay after the abundance of mussels in the bay – on 3 February 1488. His landing will again be celebrated this year with the 2016 Dias Festival from 3 February 2016 to 7 February 2016.
In the spirit of “Where Cultures Meet” there will be something for everybody to enjoy at the 2016 Dias Festival – 528 years down the road of the landing of Dias’s fleet at Mossel Bay on 3 February 1488. As been a feature of this festival – entry will be FREE! This will enable all to enjoy some of South Africa’s most popular artists and international shows free of charge.
